Growing turkeys at home

Earlier, raising turkeys at home was the prerogative of Mexicans. Then America was discovered, and the bird ceased to be a curiosity. Now you can meet her at many farmsteads of Europeans along with chickens and ducks. The weight of one turkey can reach 40 kg, the meat is tasty, and the eggs of this bird are large.

How to keep turkeys at home

Turkeys require increased attention. During their cultivation, you should act in accordance with the rules:

  • there should always be clean water in the drinker, always warm;
  • the temperature in the room should be 37 degrees, the lighting is constant;
  • 2 times a week, the digestive tract of chicks is disinfected with potassium permanganate;
  • the chicks are kept in a box, on the bottom of which straw is placed. The newspaper in this case will not work, the paws of the bird will disperse.

What room can turkeys live in? If you have ever bred chickens, there will be no problems, the same barn is suitable for turkey poults. The only condition is that it must be spacious so that the bird can walk quietly.

The content involves the installation of perches. Each turkey should have 40 cm of space. Nests should be in dark places, you can install them in 2 rows. For 5 layers - 1 nest. At the entrance to the nest a threshold is set up. The optimal size of the place for laying eggs is 50x70 cm. Males are placed separately from the females.

Also turkeys require compliance with the following conditions:

  • straw on the floor changes 2 times a week, it must be dry and clean;
  • in winter, the temperature in the room should not fall below -5 degrees;
  • sharp temperature fluctuations are prohibited;
  • the room should be aired;
  • the bird does not tolerate dampness and frost.

The maintenance of turkeys involves the exercise of walking in the summer - morning and evening. If possible, on the street for each bird should be 20 square meters of area. The soil surface is inoculated with alfalfa or clover. Special canopies are installed, under which they put drinking bowls and feeders.

How to start broiler breeding for meat, keeping, feeding and caring

Breeding turkey poultry is a bit more complicated than chickens. In the first days of life, they need high fever and great care.

Domestic turkey, like wild turkey, has a pronounced brood instinct. At home, this quality is more likely to interfere, as the bird rushes less and loses weight. But there are several ways for a turkey to get up from its nest:

  1. Send her out for a walk.
  2. Aim bright light at the socket.
  3. Reduce room temperature.
  4. Plant a male in a laying hen.

Breeding involves the proper implementation of feeding. It differs from feeding other types of birds. So, in the process of growth, turkeys should receive animal proteins. In order for the eggs to turn out good and the egg production to be high, it is necessary to ensure that the bird receives a sufficient amount of vitamins.

Food should be varied. It should include trace elements, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins. Useful are:

  • nuts, lard, acorns - they are responsible for ensuring that the meat of the turkey is juicy;
  • cereals and legumes (buckwheat and oats) - they are needed to maintain fat in the body of a bird;
  • bone, fish, meat flour. From it, turkey poults receive protein, phosphorus and calcium, amino acids;
  • promote the digestion of food by straw and hay. They contain fiber. If the chicks are still small, finely chopped greens are given;
  • in winter, fir needles, if pine trees, are used to maintain vitamin C levels;
  • amino acids the bird receives from oilcake and meal;
  • dry and fresh green feeds are a source of carbohydrates.

Vitamins such as A, B, E, and N must enter the turkey's body. They are found in germinated grain, yeast, and green fodder. In the absence of these vitamins, egg production will decrease, the chicks will grow poorly, and the eggs will become small, of poor quality.

Turkey disease list

Turkeys are prone to disease at home. Consider the most common ailments.

  1. Worms. They enter the body of a bird through food or water. Localization in the body - gastrointestinal tract and respiratory tract. As a result, the turkey loses weight, and its immunity is reduced. It is difficult to remove organisms. Therefore, it is recommended to carry out prophylaxis - disinfection of the room.
  2. Turkeys at home can suffer from smallpox. This is a viral disease. As a result, the feathers of the bird become disheveled, the wings drop. Egg production decreases, the turkey is afraid of the light. Red spots form on the legs and mucous membranes of the bird. The bird has to be slaughtered. Healthy individuals undergo vaccination, the same procedure is carried out with chicks up to 6 weeks.
  3. Turkeys at home can suffer from tuberculosis. Symptoms - the appearance of nodules on the skin. The disease affects the internal organs, the bird becomes unproductive. Infection goes through water and food. In turkeys, diarrhea may occur. Another cause of the disease is eggs from a sick turkey and stale litter. You can’t eat meat from an infected bird. The causative agent of tuberculosis is not afraid of disinfection. The infection dies only from direct sunlight.
  4. Home turkeys can suffer from a disease such as histomonosis. It manifests itself as a result of untimely disinfection of the digestive tract. Diarrhea appears due to the fact that the liver begins to work poorly. The bird becomes lethargic and disheveled. As a treatment, turkey is supplemented with Osarol. A remedy such as phenothiazine is also used.

Tips for growing and caring

Actually raising turkeys is much easier than piglets or rabbits.

  1. The main rules that should be observed are the presence of a bright, warm and clean room and an aviary for walking.
  2. Litter changes weekly.
  3. Replaceable bedding may be used. In this case, it is constantly filled with 2-3 cm. It is changed 2 times a year - in autumn and spring.
  4. In the enclosure, you can make a bulk floor of sand. The layer should reach 20 cm.
  5. If you decide to breed turkey poultry in order to get meat, you should choose them correctly. So the chicks should keep well on their feet, the umbilical cord is scarred, the fluff around the anus is clean, without discharge.
  6. Poultry make gas contamination requirements. The carbon dioxide content should not exceed 0.25%, ammonia - 5 milligrams per square meter, hydrogen sulfide - 15 per square meter. Dustiness negatively affects the development of chicks and contributes to the appearance of infection.

So, growing turkeys is quite simple and profitable. However, the bird has high content requirements: the air in the house should be fresh, the food varied, the water in the drinking bowl clean, the litter periodically changed. Near the house there should be an aviary for walking. At the same time, due to the “hen’s syndrome,” the hen will have to be driven from the nest to get eggs from it. The difficulty lies in the fact that improper content or lack of vitamins in the diet can lead to various diseases, many of which are not so easy to cure. But if everything is done correctly, there will be a lot of meat and eggs from birds.
